Who says you need a patio to have a good time? Homepolish designer Angela Belt gives her five tips to make your indoor space just as exciting as the great outdoors.
We are in full-swing barbecue season now, and outdoor parties are being thrown left and right. You know you want to host a party too, but there’s just one little issue… you don’t have a backyard. Heck, you don’t even have a fire escape. Well, don’t fret. Even without an outdoor space, you can still be the hostess with the mostest with a great indoor venue. Simply focus on these five details, and you can’t go wrong.
1. FIRST IMPRESSIONS

When your friends come to your home, first impressions mean a lot, especially when your home is competing with perfect blue skies and eighty degree weather outside. You want to have a living room space with generous seating like an L-shaped sectional, or if you have limited space, look at poufs and accent chairs that can be folded and stored away once your guests go home. Have some great pieces in your home that your guests will literally gravitate toward when they come into your home. Small accessories or artwork that tell a little story about your recent travels will spark some conversation.
2. EMBRACE (OR CREATE) THE VIEW
Believe it or not, the view from your apartment can be a lot better than actually being outside (because you don’t have to worry about getting sunburnt or sweating profusely while still trying to look cute). So if you have floor-to-ceiling windows, do not hide them! Now is the time to flaunt those views. On the other hand, if know you know your picturesque views are nothing more than a brick wall to the adjacent apartment building, then simply bring the outdoors in through wall art. You can actually turn your living room into a gallery through a curated collection of artwork you found online or at a little flea market in your hood. With the right pieces, you can even simulate windows, as seen in this story. It doesn’t matter how you acquired the pieces, you just want to make sure your friends oooohhh and ahhh over them when they see them.
3. STOCK UP THE BAR CART
Yes, I know I talk a lot about bar carts, but they are one of the most versatile pieces of furniture you can invest in. You can use them almost anywhere and for different functions. A bar cart is an essential part of your next indoor shindig, because you can style it for the summer season. Add in some freshly cut flowers, white dishes, and tall glass tumblers that are good for summer cocktails. And don’t forget to have some fun with the bendy straws and even those cheesy little umbrellas!
4. BRING THE PICNIC INSIDE
Dining al fresco may be nice at first, but we can all admit that sooner or later you really wish you had a brought a comfier chair to sit on for that outdoor picnic. Not to mention the unexpected things all that nature brings. And we know that those citronella candles only work some of the time. With an indoor venue, you can really impress your guests with a lavish tablescape and dining room that is inviting for good conversation. Just add in some fresh summer foods, and you’re set.
5. TURN UP THE TUNES
Lastly, what does every good party have in common? Good food and better music! Find a way to create a nook in your space for listening to music, and if your space permits, a little space to dance. Going vintage is all the rage now, so an old record player could be just the thing to pull together your party. And use this as an opportunity to flaunt your design style! Layer in some photography, vases, and unique pieces around your music area to generate good vibes while listening to some dope beats.
To do indoor entertaining right, it all comes down to the details needed to keep your guests entertained throughout the evening. Focus on these areas in your home, and you are sure to make your guests forget all about that summertime fun going on outside.
